Games keeps crashing... please help^^!

OK my computer was working fine but it went in for a health check and they sent the damn thing back to factory settings. Although I saved my profile, it hasn't saved my rank or guns etc... and now everytime I play, COD4 crashes halfway through the game.
I remembered it happening before but I managed to fix it yet I have no idea how. My other games (STALKER for example) also can't cope. Yes, I have a shit rig but unless I get this problem sorted I will only be able to play for 10 minute stints... which is annoying.

OK these are my stats (not sure what I'm posting)
nvidia geforce 6600 (LOL)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.4 GHz
Intel 915 for the motherboard chipsets
SB Audigy 2 ZS

I've tried loads of different drivers for the GPU including the newest to the medium, more stable drivers.

I would be greatful if any of you guys can help. I'm going to keep looking for an answer to my problem!

MY game just freezes usually/ Sometimes random, sometimes in specific moments (like nades going off etc...) once I got the BSoD with the nv4_disp error saying something about an infinite loop.

I tried downloading the latest forceware from 3Guru and it still crashed :(

U might want before u install video Driver to Delete an Old driver so u dont install it OVer the old one. Try that

I think I've found the problem. My CPU is running way too hot... so I might try to underclock it or just get the fans going all the time.

Yeah, don't get the latest. They suck cock royally for older cards like the 6600.

Then again, looks as if you're using Vista. I'd probably be using XP with your specs if I was you. It has better drivers for the 6600.

Yeh I use XP should be getting a new computer in a month. DL-ed SpeedFan and took the side panel off the computer. Seems to be working a lot better now that the CPU is a lot cooler.

Very weird, that error is usually a Vista error.

Deffo a driver problem though. I'm pretty sure of that.

Yeh I checked the forums on the problem and I got the drivers and I haven't had the BSoD again but the game freezes (sometimes with the sound still running).
